Ryogoku sunset’s bridge glow, Karuizawa’s thirty-second view like twilight streams, lingering in dusk toasts with reflective grace.
Here we have a Karuizawa’s ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’ series released by La Maison du Whisky in mid 2016. These expressions were drawn from casks of 1999 and 2000 vintage whiskies and offered at cask strength. Each of the 36 labels in the series depicts landscape prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist, Hokusai, with Mount Fuji illustrated from different locations in various weather conditions. This particular bottle is Batch 31, the label reflects a view of Mount Fuji’s Sunset across the Ryōgoku bridge from the bank of the Sumida River at Onmayagashi Cask Strength 60.9% ABV, 700mL. Founded in 1955 with a keen eye on producing high quality whisky, Karuizawa was mothballed in 2000 and since then has achieved the kind of mythical stature reserved for only a select few distilleries. The town that gave the distillery its name is situated on a high plain at the foot of Mount Asama, a resort town. Since ceasing production in 2000, it’s increasingly rare whiskies have topped the auction charts for returns in the Japanese segment.
